Like the CIEXYZ space it derives from, CIELAB color space is a device-independent, "standard observer" model. While the LAB space is not truly perceptually uniform, it nevertheless is useful in industry for detecting small differences in color. CIELAB was intended as a perceptually uniform space, where a given numerical change corresponds to a similar perceived change in color. It expresses color as three values: L* for perceptual lightness and a* and b* for the four unique colors of human vision: red, green, blue and yellow. The CIELAB color space, also referred to as L*a*b*, is a color space defined by the International Commission on Illumination (abbreviated CIE) in 1976. Each axis of each square ranges from −128 to 127. It offers a lot more variety which can help you when editing photos with vibrant and lively colors. The CIE 1976 ( L*, a*, b*) color space (CIELAB), showing only colors that fit within the sRGB gamut (and can therefore be displayed on a typical computer display). The Advantage of Using Lab Color in Photoshopīecause Lab Color space is such a wide color space, it allows you to do things you can’t do in RGB. Here you can see how light or dark each color is. The ‘L’ channel shows no color info at all. The ‘a’ channel shows you the values on the red to green axis, while the ‘b’ channel shows the values on the blue to yellow axis. In Lab Color mode, you’ll see the a, b, and L channel. In RGB mode you would see the Red, Green, and Blue channel. If the panel is not visible, go to Window in the top menu and choose Channels. The a-axis (green to red), b-axis (blue to yellow) and Lightness axis. It specifies a color using a 3-axis system. RGB and CMYK color spaces specify a color by telling a device how much of each color is needed. It uses three values (L, a, and b) to specify colors. Lab Color is a more accurate color space. CMYK, on the other hand, stands for ‘Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black’ and is often used by graphic designers to print artwork. Cameras and computer screens use this color space.
